چکیده
COPYRIGHT © 2015 BY THE JOURNAL OF BONE AND JOINT SURGERY, INCORPORATED » Distraction osteogenesis, utilized for reconstruction of skeletal deformities and bone defects, encompasses three phases of repair that are distinct from those of fracture-healing: latency, distraction, and consolidation. During distraction, osteogenic potential is maintained because of a number of molecular, cellular, and mechanical influences.

Bone development and its relation to fracture repair. The role of mesenchymal osteoblasts and surface osteoblasts.
Bone development occurs by two mechanisms: intramembranous bone formation and endochondral bone formation. Bone tissue forms by eventual differentiation of osteoprogenitor cells into either mesenchymal osteoblasts (MOBL), which synthesize woven bone in random orientation, or surface osteoblasts (SOBL), which synthesize bone on surfaces in a well oriented lamellar array. Bone repair uses the sam...
متن کاملSimulating lateral distraction osteogenesis
Distraction osteogenesis is an effective method for generating large amounts of bone in situ for treating pathologies such as large bone defects or skeletal malformations, for instance leg-length discrepancies. While an optimized distraction procedure might have the potential to reduce the rate of complications significantly, our knowledge of the underlying mechanobiological processes is still ...
متن کاملMolecular signaling in bone fracture healing and distraction osteogenesis.
The process of fracture healing has been described in detail in many histological studies. Recent work has focused on the mechanisms by which growth and differentiation factors regulate the fracture healing process. Rapid progress in skeletal cellular and molecular biology has led to the identification of many signaling molecules associated with the formation of skeletal tissues, including memb...
متن کاملThe Molecular and Cellular Events That Take Place during Craniofacial Distraction Osteogenesis
SUMMARY Gradual bone lengthening using distraction osteogenesis principles is the gold standard for the treatment of hypoplastic facial bones. However, the long treatment time is a major disadvantage of the lengthening procedures. The aim of this study is to review the current literature and summarize the cellular and molecular events occurring during membranous craniofacial distraction osteoge...
متن کاملMolecular mechanisms controlling bone formation during fracture healing and distraction osteogenesis.
Fracture healing and distraction osteogenesis have important applications in orthopedic, maxillofacial, and periodontal treatment. In this review, the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate fracture repair are contrasted with bone regeneration that occurs during distraction osteogenesis. While both processes have many common features, unique differences are observed in the temporal app...
